Reston Station represented one of the region’s most highly anticipated projects, creating a multi-modal transportation development consisting of below- and above-grade parking, office, residential, retail and hotel space. The development, located adjacent to the Wiehle Avenue Metro Station on the newly constructed Silver Line, provided over 1.3 million SF of hotel, office, residential and retail space above a 1.5 million SF underground parking garage.

Designed by world-renowned architect Helmut Jahn, the first of the three office buildings is a 16-story structure supported by non-traditional, non-straight columns which form an ‘X’ on the exterior of the building, creating unique MEP design challenges for the team. The structure is also most narrow at the bottom and expands in floor width as it vertically ascends, creating a distinctly modern looking building which now defines the Reston landscape.

GHT provided Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Engineering services for Office Building 1 as part of the Reston Station development, including all below- and above-grade parking structures. Building 1 utilized an individual air distribution system with a chilled water-based system and mechanical rooms at each level. The DOAS system included perimeter DOAS terminal units with heating coils and a computer-based DDC/electronic type Building Automation System (BAS).
