Maryland Building Energy Performance Standards

The Maryland Building Energy Performance Standards (MD BEPS) program mandates that buildings over 35,000 square feet achieve net zero direct greenhouse gas emissions and comply with Energy Use Intensity (EUI) standards by 2040.

Interim compliance milestones are set for 2025, 2030, and 2035, with the first deadline for benchmarking on September 1, 2025.

BEPS Compliance Timeline

BEPS Compliance Timeline

  1. Benchmark by September 2025
  2. Implement Initial Improvements by 2030
  3. Complete Further Upgrades by 2035
  4. Achieve Net Zero Standard by 2040 (or earlier)

What can Building Owners do?

  1. Benchmark
  2. Catalog Existing Combustion Equipment
  3. Complete an Energy Audit
  4. Develop a Plan to Improve Efficiency, Reduce Usage, or Convert from Gas to Electricity

What’s the Plan?

When developing a plan to improve efficiency, reduce usage, or convert from gas to electricity, it’s important to include the following:

  • Equipment Replacement Options
  • Sustainability + Energy Codes
  • Redundancy + Resiliency Planning
  • Budget for Projects
  • Timeline

What do Improvements look like?

Possible improvements can include equipment retrofits + replacements, building automations, and commissioning.
