Atriums | MEP and Fire Protection Design Considerations

1 AIA Learning Unit (GHT-ME-051117)

This course, taught by Senior Engineers from GHT Limited, addresses mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design considerations for building atriums. Participants will understand the codes and jurisdictional requirements that dictate MEP/FP design for these specialty spaces. Participants will also learn about the unique calculations and data required to successfully execute an atrium design.

  • Learning Objective 1: Participants will be able to identify the relevant Architectural information needed to establish the MEP/FP requirements, obtain a permit and complete construction.
  • Learning Objective 2: Participants will understand or be able identify major MEP/FP systems that are required to serve an Atrium.
  • Learning Objective 3:¬†Participants will be able to identify code references that govern the requirements for MEP/FP systems which serve atriums.
  • Learning Objective 4:¬†Participants will understand the effects of stratification of smoke in high atriums and what systems are utilized to detect smoke in an atrium that has cooled before reaching the top.
