The Washington Gas Springfield Operations Center project broke new ground in sustainability, with a design that features natural gas-powered stationary fuel cells and natural gas-fired peak shaving generators that convert natural gas to electricity. Other advanced concepts, including a highly efficient thermal envelope and MEP systems, resulted in a facility that uses 40% less energy than a modern ASHRAE 90.1 compliant building. It also has a 65% smaller carbon footprint than a comparable, code compliant site on the electric grid.
The site includes a 170,000 SF commercial office, 75,000 SF industrial building, and 200,000 SF of parking. Additional features include a data center with uninterruptible power system (UPS) and HVAC redundancy and a 24/7 operations center for gas control/monitoring and dispatching operations. The operations center is fully backed up by the UPS and generator for all lighting, receptacle and HVAC power needs.
